DURING THE 1920S-30S INTERNATIONAL TREATIES AND LACK OF FUNDING PREVENTED ANY SIGNIFICANT STRENGTHENING OR MODERNISING OF THE ROYAL NAVY. AS SO OFTEN, BRITAIN LEARNED HER LESSONS THE HARD WAY, AND CLAWED HER WAY BACK. BY MID-1943 THE ROYAL NAVY DOMINATED THE MEDITERRANEAN, WAS CONVINCINGLY WINNING THE BITTER CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE ATLANTIC U-BOATS, AND WAS CONVOYING VAST QUANTITIES OF WAR MATERIAL ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND TO RUSSIA. THE `SENIOR SERVICE` MADE A HUGE CONTRIBUTION TO THE D-DAY LANDINGS IN 1944, AND SENT THE EAST INDIES AND PACIFIC FLEETS TO SUPPORT THE USN IN THE FINAL CAMPAIGNS AGAINST JAPAN.
