In April 1713, in the wake of the War of the Spanish Succession, hundreds of privateers, now out of a job, turned to piracy. Among them was Edward Teach - more popularly known as `Blackbeard`. He joined the pirate ranks in New Providence, and by early 1717 had become a pirate captain, causing havoc off the North American seaboard, and establishing a base for pirate forays on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina`s outer banks. In the neighboring colony of Virginia, Governor Alexander Spotswood decided to take action! The attack on Blackbeard`s lair was the largest anti-piracy operation of the `Golden Age of Piracy`, and a textbook example of how to deal with the scourge of piracy.
